Bauhaus textile reconstructions in the studio of Walter Gropius at Weimar
In 1999 the studio of Walter Gropius, situated on the first floor of the Van de Velde building, seat of the Bauhaus Universität-Weimar, was reconstructed. The project included the reconstruction of the textiles that were present at Weimar in 1923 when the Bauhaus was opened to the public with a large exhibition.
For this space Gropius had chosen two textile works produced in weaving laboratory: a silk tapestry created by Else Moeglin for the door that led into Itten's study and a 315 square carpet designed and woven by Benita Otte.
The Bauhaus Universität-Weimar entrusted the reconstruction of the colors and techniques of both these works to Studio Aphorisma, owned by Anna Silberschmidt and Nicola Sansò, who, in undertaking this complex project, provided an invaluable contribution to the overall reconstruction of the so-called “Gropius Zimmer”.
The results of this work are documented in the volume: “Das Gropius-Zimmer" by Klaus Jurgen Winkler / Gerhard Oschmann Ed. Bauhaus-Universität-Weimar – Universitatverlag. 2nd edition 2008
